The tool most marketers still search for as Looker Studio is officially named Data Studio again: Google renamed Data Studio to Looker Studio in October 2022, then in April 2026 renamed it back, and lookerstudio.google.com now redirects to datastudio.google.com. Same product throughout, free at its core and frankly the solution that everyone loves.
Facts verified August 2026 against Google’s documentation.
The name: a round trip, sorted
The timeline of the google data studio:
The product launched as Data Studio and carried that name for years. On October 11, 2022, Google renamed it Looker Studio, bringing it under the Looker umbrella and launching Looker Studio Pro, the paid tier, at the same time. There were some rumours that Data Studio was an effort of Google to replace Google analytics but of course that wasn’t the case.
In April 2026 the journey reversed: Google renamed Looker Studio back to Data Studio (the blog post landed April 11, the release note April 16), positioning Looker as the enterprise BI platform and Data Studio as the self-service tool that complements it independently. The AI features moved with it: Gemini in Looker became Gemini in Data Studio.
So the round trip reads: Data Studio until 2022, Looker Studio from 2022 to 2026, Data Studio again since. The practical takeaways: Looker Studio, Data Studio and Google Data Studio all mean the same product, every era’s tutorials still apply, and Looker without the Studio is a different, enterprise product with its own pricing. Write “Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio)” and everyone knows what you mean.
What it actually Looker Studio does?
Connect. Per the official gallery as of August 2026: 21 Google-built connectors, Google Analytics, Google Ads, BigQuery, Sheets, Search Console and peers, and more than 1,400 connectors in total once partner connectors are counted. The honest caveat inside that big number: many partner connectors are paid third-party products, so the “free tool” can acquire a connector budget.
Blend. Sources join inside a report, so spend from one connector can sit against outcomes from another.
Visualize. Charts, tables, controls and calculated fields: the full dashboard toolkit, genuinely accessible to non-analysts.
Share. Reports live as links showing current data, with scheduled delivery for the inboxes that prefer arriving reports.
One boundary worth stating plainly: connectors move data into charts; they do not clean or reconcile it. Messy campaign names stay messy on the dashboard, which is why the pipeline layer underneath still matters as much as ever.
Free versus Pro, with the actual price
The base product is free: Google lists Data Studio at no charge for creators and report viewers, and the free tier genuinely covers most marketing teams’ reporting needs.
Data Studio Pro is listed at 9 dollars per user per project per month, under the tier name “Data Studio Pro (Project subscription),” with Google noting that per-user pricing varies with subscription length. Billing runs per license, monthly.
What Pro adds: organization-owned content tied to Google Cloud projects, so reports survive their creators; team workspaces with roles; automated delivery at scale, up to 200 schedules per report; customer-managed encryption keys and data-residency options for the security-conscious; and the Gemini in Data Studio features, currently in Preview: calculated fields from natural-language descriptions, and report export to Slides with generated summaries. Conversational Analytics, chat-with-your-data, gained a Code Interpreter in Preview in July 2025 for Pro subscriptions. We do not know exactly the total figures of Pro and how many advertisers and businesses are using.
One thing is for sure. Google Data studio and looker studio revolutionised dashboards and BI. They created a seamless experience that allowed millions of businesses to get access to descriptive analytics which was not the case before it. Google once again created an entire industry.
What are the The limits of Google Data studio
Freshness. BigQuery and SQL connectors refresh every 12 hours by default (configurable down to minutes); Google Sheets defaults to every 15 minutes. A dashboard lags its sources by design, so know the refresh setting before trusting this morning’s number in this morning’s meeting.
Blending. A blend joins at most five tables, with five join types available. Blends are for light joining; anything heavier belongs in the warehouse before the dashboard ever sees it.
Extracts. Extracted data sources cap at 100 MB and 750,000 rows. Extracts are snapshots, fast and static, and the caps arrive sooner than teams expect.
Quota walls. Heavily used live API connectors can hit platform quotas, and the symptoms look like a broken dashboard rather than a rationed one.
The design pattern that beats all four: pre-aggregate in the warehouse, keep blends simple, and let the pipeline do the joining. The dashboard should render truth, not compute it.
Can you build Marketing dashboards with Google data studio?
The answer is that Google Data studio (looker previously) dominate the marketing dashboard industry. They created the narrative of connecting different sources explicitly for marketing sources and this is where Google data studio excel. Now the question is what is the right values that you should visualize for your business. We have a guide which you can access here: KPIs that actually commit and we talk about the values and measurements that make sense for your business. Regardless of the visuals, the harsh truth is that dashboards can’t take you far. Indeed dashboards and any kind of BI is the first initial step towards informed decisions but in a complex environment you need more.
Dashboards describe, they never explain. The budget questions, what caused what, where the next euro earns most, belong to marketing mix modeling and MarSci’s Causal-Driven Attribution, book a call with MarSci if you want to discuss more.

No. In April 2026 Google renamed it back to Data Studio, its original name, with lookerstudio.google.com redirecting to datastudio.google.com. The Looker Studio name applied from October 2022 to April 2026. It is the same product throughout, so tutorials and skills from every era still apply.
Yes, at its core: Google lists the base product at no charge for creators and report viewers, and the free tier covers most marketing reporting. Data Studio Pro, listed at 9 dollars per user per project per month as of August 2026, adds team workspaces, scheduled delivery at scale, enterprise security and Gemini features.
Looker is Google Cloud’s enterprise BI platform: governed metric definitions, robust permissions, embedded analytics, separately priced. Data Studio, formerly Looker Studio, is the free self-service visualization tool. The 2022 rename yoked the names together and the 2026 rename separated them again, but they were always different products.
Freshness defaults of 12 hours on BigQuery and SQL connectors and 15 minutes on Sheets, blends capped at five tables, extracts capped at 100 MB and 750,000 rows, and API quota walls on heavily used live connectors. Pre-aggregating in a warehouse and keeping blends simple designs around all four.
As of August 2026 the official gallery lists 21 Google-built connectors, Analytics, Google Ads, BigQuery, Sheets, Search Console among them, and more than 1,400 in total including partner connectors. Many partner connectors are paid third-party products, so budget for the connector layer separately from the free tool.
